Understanding how CEREC crowns are made helps explain why this advanced treatment can be a practical option for busy Northern Beaches patients who want a precise, natural-looking restoration with fewer appointments.
CEREC is a chairside digital system used to design and create certain ceramic restorations at the dental clinic. Rather than relying on conventional putty impressions and an off-site dental laboratory, your dentist captures a detailed digital scan, designs the crown on screen, and mills it from a high-quality ceramic block. The process is highly technical, but the experience for the patient is designed to be calm, comfortable and efficient.
How CEREC Crowns Are Made Step by Step
Every successful crown begins with diagnosis, not machinery. Your dentist first examines the tooth, surrounding gums and bite. X-rays may be required to check the roots and the bone around the tooth, particularly if there is a large old filling, crack, deep decay or previous root canal treatment.
A crown may be recommended when a tooth has lost too much structure for a filling to provide reliable protection. It can restore strength, shape and appearance, but it is not the right answer for every tooth. If decay reaches the nerve, for example, root canal treatment may be needed before a crown. If the tooth is fractured below the gum line, another solution may be more appropriate.
Preparing the tooth conservatively
Once the treatment plan is confirmed, the tooth is gently shaped to make room for the ceramic crown. The amount removed depends on the condition of the tooth and the material selected. The aim is always to preserve healthy tooth structure where clinically possible while creating enough space for a crown that is strong and looks natural.
Local anaesthetic is commonly used so treatment is comfortable. For suitable procedures, modern techniques and technology can also help make dental care feel less confronting for patients who are anxious about drills or needles.
Your dentist removes decay, weak tooth material and any failing filling material. If the remaining tooth needs additional support, a build-up may be placed before the crown preparation is completed. Taking a digital scan
Instead of placing impression material in a tray, the dentist uses a small intraoral camera to scan the prepared tooth, nearby teeth and the opposing bite. The scanner creates a detailed 3D image of your mouth on screen.
This part is one reason many patients prefer the CEREC process. Digital scanning is generally more comfortable than traditional impressions, especially for people with a sensitive gag reflex. It also allows the dentist to review the scan immediately. If an area needs more detail, it can be rescanned straight away rather than waiting for a physical impression to be assessed later.
The scan records more than the prepared tooth. Your dentist needs the shape and position of neighbouring teeth, the opposing arch and the way your teeth meet. A crown that looks excellent but feels high when you bite is not a successful restoration, so bite information is central to the design.
Designing the crown on screen
Using specialised CEREC software, the dentist creates a virtual crown based on your scan. The program provides a proposed design, but this is not a one-click process. Clinical judgement matters at every stage.
Your dentist adjusts the crown’s contours, contact points and chewing surface to suit your mouth. They consider how the new crown will touch the teeth beside it, how it will meet the opposing teeth and how much ceramic is needed in areas that take greater biting force. For a front tooth, shade, translucency and symmetry are also especially important.
This digital design stage can be valuable because it gives the dentist detailed control before any ceramic is milled. The goal is a crown that functions comfortably, supports healthy contacts between teeth and blends naturally with your smile.
Milling the ceramic crown
After the design is approved, the selected ceramic block is placed in the CEREC milling unit. Small diamond burs carve the crown from the block according to the digital design. The milling process commonly takes around 10 to 20 minutes, although the overall appointment length depends on the complexity of your tooth and the finishing required.
CEREC crowns can be made from different dental ceramics. The most appropriate choice depends on where the tooth sits, your bite forces, the desired appearance and the amount of tooth remaining. Some materials offer exceptional natural translucency, while others are chosen for greater strength in high-load areas such as molars.
The ceramic block is selected to match the planned tooth shade as closely as possible. For highly visible teeth, your dentist may add characterisation such as subtle surface colour or staining to create a more lifelike result. Natural teeth are not one flat shade, and a quality crown should respect that detail.
Firing, finishing and polishing
Some ceramic materials require a short firing cycle in a specialised furnace after milling. This may strengthen the material and develop its final shade. Other materials can be polished or glazed without the same firing process. The exact workflow depends on the ceramic chosen for your crown.
The crown is then refined by hand. Your dentist checks the surface texture, margins and colour before trying it in your mouth. This is where advanced digital technology meets careful craftsmanship. The milling machine creates the foundation, but the final result still relies on a clinician who understands aesthetics, function and precise fit.
Trying in and cementing the crown
Before the crown is permanently bonded, your dentist checks how it sits on the tooth and how it contacts the teeth around it. They will assess the shade and overall appearance, then ask you to bite on thin marking paper to identify any areas needing minor adjustment.
Once the fit and bite are confirmed, the tooth and crown are prepared for cementation. The crown is bonded or cemented using materials selected for the restoration and clinical situation. Excess cement is removed carefully, and the final bite is checked again.
For many suitable cases, the whole process can be completed in one appointment. That means no temporary crown, no need to be especially cautious while waiting for a laboratory restoration and no second visit solely for fitting. However, same-day treatment should never be rushed. Complex bite cases, very dark teeth, multi-tooth cosmetic work or teeth requiring additional treatment may be better served by a different approach or a laboratory-made crown.
What Affects the Final Result?
A CEREC crown is not simply a piece of ceramic shaped by a machine. Its durability and appearance depend on diagnosis, tooth preparation, material selection, digital design, bonding technique and your ongoing care.
Crowns can last many years, but they are not indestructible. Grinding or clenching, chewing ice or hard objects, untreated gum disease and decay around the crown edge can all shorten their lifespan. If you grind your teeth at night, a custom night guard may be recommended to protect both the crown and your natural teeth.
Good daily brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular dental examinations remain essential. The crown itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth underneath and around its edges still can. Prompt attention to a loose crown, persistent sensitivity or a change in bite can prevent a smaller issue becoming more complicated.
